Log Profiles and Corners

This section of our web-site is dedicated to showing our log work up close, with all photos portraying a clear view of our craftsmanship, from corner notches to the log walls and joinery.

Corner Notches

Good quality craftsmanship is in fact the heart of any log home...allowing it to survive generation after generation, and it is truly where we feel that we excell. With a strong desire to not to ever mass produce, but take time and care with every home that is built in our yard, Falcon Log Homes Ltd. and our crew of professional builders work hard to surpass all standards, and to create homes that reflect both our customers vision for their home and our desire to fulfill that dream to the best of our ability .

An important factor to consider when purchasing your log home, is what type of log profile and corner style you would like to have incorporated. This decision will greatly effect the look of your home, both aesthetically as well as structurally in regards to structural engineering and weather tight performance.

Log Corners

The corner style that you choose as well as the quality of craftsmanship of the corners, plays a significant role in the overall appearance of your home.

We predominantly use the Saddle-Notch on our corners, also referred to as the Saddle-Cope, which is one of the most traditional corner intersections.

Our Saddle-Notches employ a locking and self draining Saddle, that ensures a tight fit. The sapwood is removed from the top portion of each log. The shrink fit notched (wedged) surface directly allows the scribed over log to both shrink and move up the wedge. This compensates for any log shrinkage occurring on the corner notches.

The opposing walls of a Saddle-Notch begin with a half log in order to ensure that the logs overlap each other at the corners rather than butt into one another. All the exterior log ends are sanded then chamfered (chiseled) with small diamond cuts in order to enhance the overall appearance. Notches are all hand-slicked with a chisel providing more of a handcrafted look, as well as diminishing the "fuzziness" that sanding with a 24 grit produces.

This greatly decreases the absorption of moisture and accumulation of dust. When staining your home, please ensure to add additional coats to the log ends.

Upon request, we can incorporate the notch of your choice.
