Decorating Tips for Children's Bedrooms: Kids's Bedding and Room Design - Let's Get Started!

Creating a fun, fresh and vibrant room for your child doesn't have to be all that hard or complicated. There are some very simple steps and ideas that one can incorporate into either creating a whole new space for your little one, or re-designing an existing one. I think that with a little imagination, and by including your child in the design process, the possibilities are endless.

You will find there are many articles throughout this web site pertaining to children's' room decor as well as design tips for toddlers and teens. This article will focus primarily on the kindergarten and primary school-age group level. By the age of 3 or 4, children do have some very clear preferences in regards to the color they would like to see in their new room. From 6 to 11 they are definitely ready to have a lot of input into what want specifically in regards to color, theme or patterns.

The best place to start is by analyzing the function of the room, as the best kids' rooms are designed around these functions. This is where your child sleeps, plays, dreams, studies, spends time with both old and new friends, or time spent alone. Children are constantly discovering new interests, such as sports, and often have thoughts and opinions on the latest trends and fashions. Younger kids are quite often delighted in make believe, and envision a room bursting with imagination.

Here are some good ways to start the process: Analyses the function of the room and make a list of what items are necessary.

Here we start with the basic functions of the space:

sleeping
changing/dressing
clothing storage
toy/possession storage
optional play or crafts area
desk/computer/work space

Some questions to consider are: will they be studying in their room? Is the room for one or two children? Will there be a computer station? How much room should be provided for storage, clothing, sports equipment, electronic games etc? School age kids are often forging new friendships and find it very important to have sleepovers. Will there be an extra bed, or trundle? The answers to these questions will give you an initial idea as to what furniture and storage items are required, and the space they will need. It is a good idea to start formulating in your mind, at this point in time, creative ways to keep things neat and tidy.

Talk to Your Child

Good communication with your child is essential prior to developing a plan of action. This is to be their private space within the family home, and their options matter! There are many ways to discover what they envision their new room will be. Being included certainly builds their excitement and appreciation. One way to include them is by first listening to their ideas and writing them down as they speak. This can be aided with viewing photos from magazines, books, or kids bedding images that are available online. Get them talking about what they like and don't like about their existing room, and discuss possible color selections. Children are naturally drawn to color and some will have very definite preferences. You can also have a look at their drawings in order to determine a predominant color they use.

Discuss Themes or Patterns

Kids' participating in the designing of their own room, can make for an environment that satisfies and pleases both parent and child. The fun begins in the choosing of a theme, or specific pattern that is of interest to them. Themes create a magical world that can inspire
imaginations, and pattern can be used as a vehicle for introducing bright and vivid colors. There are so many themes available to choose from. On this site alone, the bedding themes range from dinosaur, jungle animals, princess, butterflies, fairies, monster trucks, cowboy,
cowgirl, pirates, outer space and many more! Many of the bedding sets also have coordinating room decor, such as window treatments, rugs and wall art. Kids also may have a preference for cartoon characters, or sport activities that they participate in, such as soccer, ballet, or hockey.

Patterns can create a very playful and creative room. There are a wide variety of mix and match patterns that work well together. For little girls,a combination of polka dots, stripes, floral's or gingham can be used in a variety of different ways. Boys rooms work well with a combination of stripes and solids. Once you have a clear picture of what will work best for both you and your child, it is time to search for those particular items. At this time, it's good to keep an open mind, as sometimes parts of, or even the entire concept will change. Case in point, my niece was very interested in floral patterns, until she recently viewed the collection available by LittleMissMatched in the girls section of this site. The bright, bold patterns, and the 192 mix and match possibilities with just one comforter set...and her room design took us on an entirely different approach.
